Total notional volume at LMAX Digital was impressive in the previous week, and closed out very strong. Total notional volume from Monday through Thursday came in at $6.6 billion, putting it on pace with volume from a week earlier.

Bitcoin volume was however a little softer than a week earlier over the same time frame, coming in 16% lower. Still volume was robust into the latter portion of last week. But ether volume shined, up 17% from a week earlier over the same time frame. This coincided with a record run in the price of ether.

Looking at average position size over the past 30 days, we’re seeing average bitcoin position size at $13,686 and average position size for ether at $6,450.

Volatility has been slowly picking up since finding a bottom in July. We’re now looking at average daily ranges in bitcoin and ether of $3,143 and $239 respectively.

Two big stories in crypto markets into the new week are the ability for bitcoin to be so well supported into dips, and the record high in the price of ether.

On the bitcoin side, we’ve heard about El Salvador continuing to increase exposure, this after adding another 420 bitcoins to its portfolio.

There’s also been chatter around data that suggests a third of all bitcoin in circulation is held by long-term owners.

On the ether side, it seems a lot of the optimism has been around the latest Ethereum upgrade. This is an extension of the Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP) 1559 implemented earlier this year, which burns a portion of fees paid to miners, thereby removing ether from circulation and driving the price higher.

Since activation of the upgrade more coins have been burned than new coins issued.
