Reflections in the aftermath of a challenging October

LMAX Digital performance

LMAX Group digital asset volumes closed the week with a bang, putting in the strongest performance in over a month. Total volume for Friday came in at $1.7 billion.

Breaking it down per coin, bitcoin volume came in at $1.4 billion. Ether volume came in at $161 million.

Looking at average position size over the past 30 days, we’re seeing average bitcoin position size at $4,911 and average position size for ether at $2,457.

Volatility has been in contraction mode since rebounding sharply from its August low. We’re looking at average daily ranges in bitcoin and ether of $1,853 and $81 respectively.

Digital asset markets gave back part of their third-quarter recovery during October, with Bitcoin declining a little over seven percent and Ethereum losing around sixteen percent. The selling reflected a combination of weaker global risk appetite, pressure on technology stocks and a major security breach at Binance toward month-end. These developments interrupted the recovery and weighed heavily on sentiment, but we believe the broader context matters.

Even without the Binance incident, a correction in digital assets would have been understandable given the intensity of the setbacks across equities. Our interpretation is that the market’s ability to absorb both external pressure and a significant industry shock offers evidence of underlying support, despite the disappointing monthly performance.

Ethereum remains central to our constructive view of the asset class, notwithstanding its sharper decline during October. Its underperformance was consistent with investors reducing exposure to more volatile assets as confidence weakened, although the scale of the setback was clearly disappointing. We continue to distinguish this price adjustment from the longer-term opportunity in the infrastructure supporting stablecoins, decentralized finance and the movement of traditional financial assets onto blockchain networks.

In our view, a difficult month for market performance does not diminish the importance of these applications. Our focus remains on platforms and businesses capable of translating adoption into sustainable activity, meaningful revenues and durable value for token holders.

Institutional participation presented a more mixed picture during October. Spot Bitcoin exchange-traded funds recorded net outflows over the month, with substantial withdrawals around the Binance incident highlighting the sensitivity of these channels to short-term uncertainty. Established investment products facilitate selling as well as buying, and their growing importance does not eliminate volatility.

Nevertheless, we continue to regard the infrastructure now available to advisers, wealth managers and institutions as an important structural development. October demonstrated that allocations remain responsive to market conditions, but we do not interpret a period of redemptions as evidence that the longer-term expansion of institutional participation has run its course.

The Binance hack was the most significant industry-specific development of the month, renewing concerns about custody, operational resilience and confidence in centralized intermediaries. The reported multibillion-dollar theft and suspension of withdrawals understandably intensified selling pressure.

For us, the incident reinforces the importance of secure custody arrangements and careful counterparty selection. It does not, by itself, invalidate the investment case for the underlying blockchain networks or the applications built upon them.

Regulatory clarity remains important, but October also underlined that broader adoption depends on operational standards keeping pace with the industry’s growth. Restoring confidence after such an event requires a credible response and evidence that customer assets and access are being protected.

Macro conditions provided an important explanation for the weakness beyond the exchange incident. Sharp setbacks in technology shares reflected growing concern about the scale of artificial intelligence spending and the returns needed to justify it. Meanwhile, the Federal Reserve maintained a cautious stance toward inflation, and elevated energy prices continued to complicate the policy outlook.

Falling Treasury yields late in the month offered limited relief as investors sought safety rather than increased exposure to risk. Against that backdrop, crypto’s correction was understandable even before the Binance shock. We continue to see scope for an eventual reversal in dollar strength to provide a tailwind, although our constructive outlook does not require an immediate improvement in the currency or monetary policy backdrop.

Our broader thesis remains firmly constructive as we enter November. Despite the setbacks since September, we believe the market’s broader structure remains consistent with a major cycle low having already formed, with the subsequent weakness representing correction and consolidation within a developing recovery.

This remains our assessment rather than a confirmed outcome, and further volatility is possible while the consequences of the Binance incident and the equity-market adjustment unfold. Nevertheless, we do not believe October exhausted the opportunity created by the difficult first half. The combination of underlying adoption, established investment channels and the market’s capacity to absorb substantial adverse news leaves us looking for renewed strength through November and December, and a strong close to the year.
