Fact is, we’ve been recruiting pretty much non-stop for quite a while now. We put a lot of energy and care into making sure we find the right people, but it’s equally important that LMAX Exchange is the right move for any prospective candidate.
In terms of skills and experience, we’re not really that prescriptive. Basically, you simply need to be an exceptionally talented developer who is also intelligent and willing to learn. Pretty much regardless of what you already know, there is a lot to learn and quickly – but that also needs to be a big part of the attraction of the role.
Cultural fit is also really important for us but this is not quite as ominous or odious as it sounds. Everyone in our current team is an individual, but we share a lot of common values. We are all really intelligent, not at all big headed, passionate about technology and love to learn from each other. We have a lot of big personalities but no room for ego. So, we make sure anyone we are considering for a role meets a significant proportion of the team.
The recruitment process itself is fairly conventional. Generally it consists of a number of phone and face to face interviews depending on the level. These will often include some practical activities. We don’t do any weird stuff like interview candidates in groups. Not yet anyway.
Some people do make it all the way through the process. Each new starter gets a mentor to help them get settled in and to make sure they’re on track until they’re up to speed. You’re on a team and pairing from day one, and with our continuous delivery process your first code will probably be in production within two weeks. And it needs to be awesome.
